Group Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

As a PI, I am committed to cultivating a research group that is diverse in its makeup, inclusive in its values, and provides equitable mentoring and opportunities to each lab member. I will strive to cultivate a group environment that is supportive of first-generation undergraduate and graduate student researchers and researchers from underrepresented communities. In the Andrews Research Lab, we will adopt a model that pairs junior researchers with more experienced graduate student mentors in near-peer relationships—not only to ensure successful translation of research knowledge and skills but also to facilitate the natural growth of effective mentoring skillsets.

As a lab, we will strive to create a supportive research environment for scientists from diverse backgrounds including those from different races and ethnicities, gender identities and sexualities, socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, and familial obligations. As a lab, we will devote a minimum of one group meeting each semester to evaluating the health of the group and discussing and implementing group efforts related to DEI.
